2019 WINTER SPORTS WORKBOOK

DAINESE MILESTONES The idea takes shape

D-air® Racing

The first drafts of the company logo were designed. The first logo featured a speed demon as a symbol of dynamism and rebellion

The first product Dainese was founded at Molvena (Vicenza). The first article Dainese produced was a pair of motocross trousers.

Protection for everyone

The collaboration with Barry Sheene led to the creation of the first back protector designed by Marc Sadler.

Back protectors, which up to that time were used only on the track, became available to the general public.

Dainese signed a three-year collaboration agreement with Fischer to introduce equipment aimed at significantly increasing safety on the ski slopes.

Protection for astronauts

The mobile clinic in the world Collaboration began with Doctor Costa's Mobile Clinic.

D-Tec® The Dainese Technology Centre (D-Tec®) is created, an R&D technical centre for the study of protective technology and the development of products for the market.

Back protectors for skiers too

The collaboration between Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and Dainese continued to make astronaut's lives safer. Dainese had already passed the NASA supplier selection procedure for making special protective items which astronauts would wear inside their space suits.

The D-air® was presented officially and used during trainings

Dainese at the Venice Biennale No impact

Kristian Ghedina, Deborah Compagnoni and the Italian National Team use Dainese back protectors at the World Cup for the first time. This was the first time that the back protector was introduced to the world of Winter Sports.

The No Impact division was formed to bring Dainese know-how to other sports: MTB, snowboard and alpine skiing.

D-air® made its debut in WC races

Dainese exhibits its innovative technologies at the 56th Venice Biennale. The company presents the D-air®, the motorcyclists’ airbag, and Biosuit®, its pressurized suit for astronauts.

D-air became the unmatched leader for airbag protection in the FIS Alpine Ski World Cup.

ESA D-air® is created

The Danish ESA astronaut Andreas Morgensen tested the SkinSuit and brought Dainese for the first time in the space.

New Zealand The Dainese Group got onboard Emirates Team New Zealand for the 2017 America’s Cup with the new Sea-Guard , essential gear for crew’s protection while sailing.

The prototype of the D-air® airbag for motorcyclists was developed together with the Israeli firm Merhav APP and presented in Munich.

On the heads of champion skiers The first Dainese ski helmet appears at the World Championship Series, developed with the assistance of the multiple title winner Lasse Kjus.

Following their success in the worlds of motorbikes, mountain bikes and skiing, Dainese decided to accept a new challenge and to bring the concept of safety to horse riding. The Dainese Equestrian Line was awarded a prize in the Safety & Security category by Beta International, the international event leader for the equestrian trade.

The first back protector in history

Dainese became increasingly popular in the world of mountain biking and became the byword for protection. Dainese provided the champions Shaun Palmer, Anne-Caroline Chausson and Cedric Gracia with its protection systems. Nicolas Vouilloz became World Downhill Champion for the seventh time and entered the history books of mountain-biking with Dainese.

The Beta International award

During the Valencia Grand Prix, the Dainese R&D department introduced D-air® Racing in full active form. During the practice sessions, a fall by Simone Grotzky saw the first airbag deployment.

Mobile research D-Mobile is created. This mobile research structure was an extension of the R&D department and visited race tracks around the world to identify and test the latest technological innovations.

Dainese became the “Safety Partner” of the Italian National Ski Team and D-Mobile provided assistance to skiers in the Alpine Skiing World Championship races.

Dainese celebrates its 45th anniversary

Dainese ski racers Mathias Mayer (Super-G) and Sofia Goggia (Downhill) both strike Gold in the Olympics, pushing the performance envelope with the advanced protection of Dainese's D-air® Ski airbag technology.

The prestigious Red Dot "Best of the Best Award" goes to the Dainese AWA (All Weather Activity) M1 jacket, acclaimed for its outdoor versatility and outstanding cross-functional performance.

BIOSUIT

SEA-GUARD

WHAT IS THE BIOSUIT? Starting from Arthur Iberall’s studies in the Fourties, it has been discovered that there are certain points of the body that, despite movements, do not contract and do not stretch. By connecting these points through the so-called “lines of non-extention”, pressure remains constant. BioSuit is designed to connect these points, being able to apply the necessary mechanic pressure to the body, although without compromising movement. The news is exactly the replacement of pneumatic pressurization with mechanic one. The inside of astronaut’s suits, in fact, in order for humans to survive in the vacuum of space, need to provide pressure. The skintight suit allows for a degree of movement impossible in a gas-filled suit.

The Dainese Group is the “Official Safety Partner” of the 2017 America’s Cup Winner Emirates Team New Zealand. The crew, who for the first time chose pedals instead of traditional “coffee grinders” to operate the winches, wore the new SEA-GUARD jacket designed and developed by Dainese, which integrates protection and aerodynamic performance with its floating functions. At over 50 knots, the conditions facing the crew are extreme, similar to those to which MotoGP riders are exposed. On-board safety is therefore the key element behind the partnership between Dainese and Emirates Team New Zealand.This has led to the creation of SEA-GUARD, the first item of protective clothing specially designed for competitive sailing. Thanks to a wise balance between Crash Absorb material and low-density PE, SEA-GUARD, in addition to its floating function, provides impact protection and also allows complete freedom of movement for next-generation grinders, who use their leg power to push pedals instead of armpowered winch grinding.

WHEN DID THE BIOSUIT GO TO SPACE? BioSuit has not gone to space yet. BioSuit was born from one of NASA’s needs who, for the first human journey to the Red Planet expected around 2030, has set up a project to design a new space suit, lighter and more practical. HOW WAS THE BIOSUIT MADE? The lines of non-extension are represented by the red and black filaments that decorate the BioSuit prototype. The suit will be made of elastic material, but for all other features options remain open. For sure, BioSuit must guarantee to astronauts oxygen inflow, protect them from effects of prolonged microgravity, solar radiation and impacts with micrometeoroids, although offering greater flexibility and finding the perfect balance with ergonomics and comfort.

SEA-GUARD is the only ergonomic and comfortable solution designed to optimise crew performance. SEA-GUARD incorporates an aerodynamic motorcycle hump, together with the Oxygen tank housing – something that the sailors must use in emergencies such as when the boat capsizes - and for on-board communication devices.

HOW DID THIS PROJECT COME ABOUT? Conceived by Dava Newman, MIT Professor and NASA’S Deputy Administartor, BioSuir has been designed by Trotti and Associates, owned by Argentinian space architect Guillermo Trotti, whereas the first prototypes are the outcome of the Dainese Science and Research Center’s know-how. -6-

The Flexagon technology for the first time into a shorts, bringing the comfort to a superior level while meeting highest safety standards. Designed to meet the needs of most demanding skiers, these shorts feature the Flex Lite technology with two overlapping layers of Crash Absorb soft memory foam on the hips and on the coccyx zone which one moreover is removable. The fabric is soft to the touch and the inner elastic bands are reinforced with silicone grippers, in order to make the protector to stay in place even during most intense phases.

Action Shorts Evo are the ultimate generation of action shorts. restyled with innovative fabric and evolved anatomy. The shorts feature ladderproof elasticated mesh with hard polypropylene plates on the coccyx and sides of the thighs (CE). PE shock absorbing inserts under the plate and silicone elasticated on the thigh to hold the shorts in place.

Uncoated, it is suitable for low light conditions, while a mirror coating is recommended for strong light. Colours and contrasts are enhanced – even when you’re racing down the mountain. The special spectral curve of the tint acts as a blue attenuator, but still allows a portion of the blue light through, in order to receive all important information from light and from your environment. SONAR allows you to better read the slopes because uneven areas in the snow (bumps and dips) are easier to recognise.

Unlike standard blue filters, the special spectral curve of ZEISS Sonar suppresses blue light but allows some to reach the eye – in the range between 380 and 500 nm. This allows you to recognize unevenness in the snow such as bumps and depressions. This makes skiing and snowboarding safer. Furthermore, the snow goggles are available with ZEISS Sonar, and the models for men are available with polarizing filters. ZEISS POL snow goggles feature thermally shaped lenses with a red tint. Dermizax™ EV is a waterproof, windproof, and wicking membrane that utilizes moving molecules, as opposed to most other membranes which have micropores. This offers a number of advantages and makes Dermizax™ shell clothing the very best on the market thanks to its high performance and superior durability. The Dermizax™ membrane is extremely flexible. It has an elasticity of more than 200%. In practice, this means that the membrane can be stretched up to twice its own length in four directions. This ensures that Dermizax™ garments are very comfortable to move in, while reducing the risk of delamination during extreme activities.

Dermizax® DX is a 2 way stretchable membrane that, thanks to ita ultrathin non porous membrane is capable to provide the user with superb waterproofness and though performance that withstands all-round outdoor conditions

Camels shed their hair naturally every year and the fibre is shorn, gathered or combed. The inner coat is passed through a de-hairing machine, in the same way as cashmere, a slow and expensive process. Baby camel fibre is softer and lighter in colour than that of an adult, and it is more expensive. Baby camel varies from white to fawn, while the adults tend to be darker brown. Baby camel is a great alternative to cashmere: it has a similar micron count but it is much more affordable. Camel fibre is also easier to dye with natural dyes as it is less likely to felt than cashmere. Camel down looks like a fluffy cloud and it is easy to spin long drawn, even without any hand carding. Camel tops are combed like wool tops and you can spin it anyway you like.

Unlike regular sheep who chew grass in the lowlands, the merino is built to survive the scorching summers and freezing winters of New Zealand’s rugged Southern Alps range. The merino can survive these extremes because of the incredible natural engineering of their fleece. Super lightweight and breathable, the merino’s summer coat keeps cool in temperatures of up to +35°C. In winter, the merino grows an extra layer of wool over their base coat to protect them against temperatures that plummet to -20°C. Simple, efficient, ingenious. Nature’s solutions aren’t tested in laboratories; they face the ultimate field test.

GOOSE DOWN

D-Dry® Plus is a proprietary microporous laminated structure that creates a waterproof and breathable fabric. Micropores are thousands of times smaller than a drop of water, but larger than water vapor, so they exclude water allowing moist vapor on the inside to move outward. D-Dry® Plus is devised of a unique, new three layer construction. This includes an ultra lightweight scrim fabric that is laminated on the back of the waterproof/breathable layer, sandwiching between the scrim, the membrane and the face fabric. This new overall construction is lighter, more packable and more durable. D-Dry® Plus effectively balances protection from rain and snow on the outside (30.000 mm water column) with the ability to let warm perspiration escape outward during high-output activities (30.000 g/m2/24hrs).

It’ s a mixture of finest Merino wool with first class down. Wool component it’s ozone treated for best washability performance, free from harmful substances. Why using MERINO WOOL? Merino wool is common in high-end, performance athletic wear. Typically meant for use in running, hiking, skiing, mountain climbing, cycling, and in other types of outdoor aerobic exercise, these clothes command a premium over synthetic fabrics. Several properties contribute to merino’s popularity for exercise clothing, compared to wool in general.

Goose down is the layer of underplumage that geese have beneath their feathers to keep them warm and dry. A down cluster is soft and fluffy and has filaments growing in all directions. Unlike feathers, down does not have quills. Goose down is traditionally used to fill pillows, duvets and other types of bedding. Goose down clusters are superior as they have larger and so possess more fill power and therefore have better insulating properties than down from any other bird. Goose down is luxuriously soft, resilient and has excellent insulating properties. It varies in colour from white to dark gray. It is also extremely breathable. Water vapour can pass through the down whilst the air pockets retain their warmth. These properties make goose down is an excellent choice of filling for duvets and other bedding.

TRAILKNIT is a fabric construction developed by electronic knitting machines linking loops of yarns on needles. This knitted construction differs from a traditional woven fabric as it is more flexible and can be more effortlessly constructed. TRAILKNIT has been developed for garments that are elastic and better respond to the skier’s motion. A garment featuring a knitted construction is more form fitting, since its elasticity allows it to contour the body more closely. Knitted constructions also enable extra curvature to be introduced without seams – akin to the heel of a sock. Knitting allows an extremely complex fabric construction: The yarn in TRAILKNIT fabric follows a meandering path that can change seamlessly forming different stitching patterns that design precise functional zoning with engineered performance in key areas.

Pertex® Quantum uses a tightly woven structure to provide a light and soft fabric that allows insulation to fully loft. Precisely constructed from incredibly fine yarns, Pertex® Quantum fabrics are designed to trap still air and improve the efficiency of insulation. A durable water repellent (DWR) finish sheds light rain and snow to provide additional weather protection. Garments made with Pertex Quantum gain great lightweight and packability, soft touch feel and windproofness to retain warmth.

A hybrid of PrimaLoft® Silver Insulation Down Blend and PrimaLoft® Silver Insulation, PrimaLoft® Silver Insulation Boost is a fusion of 80% PrimaLoft® ultra-fine fibers and 20% water-repellent down engineered to deliver incredible lightweight warmth and wet weather performance in a luxuriously soft and remarkably slim silhouette. Unmatched warmth-to-thickness thermals mean more warmth in a smaller package for greater agility and freedom of movement while a PrimaLoft® proprietary treatment ensures protective performance in variable conditions. For streamlined performance this solution blends the wet-weather protection of PrimaLoft® synthetic insulation with the enhancement of down.

Dainese‘s synthetic microfiber thermal insulation material. It offers good standard in terms of warmth to weight ratio and a relatively good compressibility.

Polartec® Power Wool™ is a design breakthrough for combining the distinct advantages of natural and synthetic fibers in a bi-component fabric. The industry standard of blending different yarns into a mixed composition reduces the intended benefits and hampers overall fabric performance. By isolating a merino wool interior and a synthetic fiber exterior we developed a hybrid fabric with distinct surface features to optimize wicking, breathability, odor resistance and durability. Wool fibers offer increased base comfort by retaining insulation and breathability even when wet. Their absorbent nature pulls moisture vapor away from your skin, transferring it to the outer synthetic layer where it expands and evaporates more quickly. This mechanical wicking action allows Polartec® Power Wool™ to keep moisture in motion at all times.

Polartec® Power Shield® was developed to bring greater strength and versatility to the soft shell fabric category. By designing a dense knit multi-component fabric we created a stronger balance between warmth, weather resistance and breathability. This adaptable protection set a new industry standard for performance fabrics that could remain comfortable and excel in calm to inclement weather conditions. By integrating an advanced micro-porous membrane between a durable weather repelling exterior we created a resilient outerwear fabric with increased breathability. The ability to block wind and water was finally directly integrated with a surface technology that could consistently increase breathability during any activity.

Polartec® High Loft™ was created to expand and enhance the performance benefits and design applications of fleece technologies. By utilizing a high loft fiber construction we developed a stunningly soft and fluffy structure that compresses to pack easily in small spaces. Large air pockets created by the extended fibers retain optimal warmth to provide the highest warmth to weight ratio of any thermal fleece fabric available today. The lofted fibers create large air pockets for retaining optimal body warmth and releasing excess heat for enhanced breathability during activities. This fluffy structure also reduces surface friction for comfortable layering with other materials.

PRO ARMOR sets the benchmark for breathability, ergonomics and protection featuring a functional pattern inspired by the fractals principle, the nature’s language used to create complex structures that now becomes the new Dainese’s protective design code. With the ultimate blend of mobility and protection, the low-profile design delivers unrestricted movement and all-day comfort while still meeting the EN 1621.1 European standards for impact protectors.

With a shape and armour system inspired by crustaceans and the armadillo, the BAP featured a composite structure, comprising an anatomically-shaped soft base and a series of articulated plates, each sized to provide the best distribution of impact forces and incorporating a low-memory, shock-absorbing polyurethane foam insert.
